Men and Dogs

Al-Ahmadiyya, June 1979 Issue (Vol. 1, No. 6, p. 7)

The dog is one of the oldest domestic animals associated with man and is considered to be his best friend. In their behaviour dogs and men follow certain common patterns. The female dog looks after its puppies well and, if need be, would sacrifice its life in their defence.

The female human does the same for her offspring. The baby is cared for and protected.

The motherly instinct is strong in both of them. The similarity ends here, or should it?

When the puppies grow up and become strong they go their own way and mind their own business.  Their mother (and father) have become old and weak but the grown-up puppies are not concerned with their lot at all. If they fall ill or die with hunger, they would not bother. That is the way of the dogs.

The human babies also grow big and become strong and are able to look after themselves in every respect.

When their parents become old and weak, they are cared for and kept in good company by their children, who do not like to follow in the footsteps of the dogs.

Says the Quran:

“And your Lord has decreed that you serve none but Him, and do good to parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say no word to them showing annoyance, nor rebuke them, and speak to them a generous word. And make yourself gentle to them with humility out of mercy, and say: My Lord, have mercy on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little” (The Holy Quran, 17:23–24).

“And We have enjoined on man goodness to his parents” (The Holy Quran, 29:8).
