The Holy Quran Search Engine

The translations and commentaries of the Holy Quran available to search are by the following translators:

• Maulana Muhammad Ali: In Dutch, French, English, Hindi, Indonesian, Javanese, Spanish, Urdu (Roman without diacritics) and Urdu (بیان القرآن اور حمائل شریف)
• Maulana Sadr-ud-Din: In German
• Maulana Ghulam Hassan Khan Niazi of Peshawar: In Urdu (حسن بیان)

There are two Holy Quran search forms available that search the Arabic and the translations with commentaries of the Holy Quran in various languages:

• Read the Quran:
  Use this form to display a portion of the Holy Quran, e.g., a part (juz), a chapter, a particular verse or a verse range. There is also an option to display all the chapters of the Holy Quran.
• Search the Quran:
  Use this form to search for particular words in the Holy Quran.

Read the Quran

Quran Selection:

The ‘Read the Quran’ form has various sections that can help display the relevant portion of the Holy Quran that the user intends to read:

1. Part/Juz number:
   
   To view a particular Part/Juz of the Holy Quran, you can either use the ‘Part list’ drop-down menu to select a Part or type its corresponding Part number in the ‘Part number’ box. The ‘Part list’ drop-down menu also has a search bar that allows users to search for a Part by typing its Part number or Part name (in either English or Arabic). If you select a Part from the ‘Part list’ box, it will automatically enter the Part number in the ‘Part number’ box and vice versa.
   
   Example:
   Type the digit 30 in the ‘Part number’ box to view ‘Amma’.
   
   If the ‘Arabic reading’ option is selected (see the ‘Selecting Options’ section below) this will display the Arabic text of the Holy Quran in continuous text format. This is useful for recital purposes.
   
   
2. Chapter number:
   
   To view a particular chapter of the Holy Quran, you can either use the ‘Chapter list’ drop-down menu to select a chapter or type its corresponding chapter number in the ‘Chapter number’ box. The ‘Chapter list’ drop-down menu also has a search bar that allows users to search for a chapter by typing its chapter number or chapter name (in either English or Arabic). If you select a chapter from the ‘Chapter list’ box, it will automatically enter the chapter number in the ‘Chapter number’ box and vice versa. This is a mandatory field.
   
   Example:
   Type the digit 1 in the ‘Chapter number’ box to view ‘Al-Fatihah’.
   
   If you wish to display the entire Holy Quran on one page, please select the ‘Display all chapters’ option. This can be useful to use your browser’s ‘find in page’ feature (CTRL + F / CMD + F) to search through the Holy Quran.
   
   If the ‘Arabic reading’ option is selected (see the ‘Selecting Options’ section below) this will display the Arabic text of the Holy Quran in continuous text format. This is useful for recital purposes. Ensure that only the chapter number is entered and the ‘start verse’ and ‘end verse’ boxes are empty to enable this feature.
   
   
3. Start verse:
   
   If you wish to view a specific verse, then select a chapter and then enter the required verse number in the ‘Start verse’ box. This is an optional field.
   
   Example:
   Type the digit 1 in the ‘Chapter number’ box and the digit 3 in the ‘Start verse’ box to view verse 3 of ‘Al-Fatihah’.
   
   
4. End verse:
   
   If you wish to view a verse range in a particular chapter, then after selecting the chapter, enter the number of the first verse of the verse range in the ‘Start verse’ box and the last verse of the verse range in the ‘End verse’ box. This is an optional field.
   
   Example:
   Type the digit 1 in the ‘Chapter number’ box, the digit 3 in the ‘Start verse’ box and digit 6 in the ‘End verse’ box to view verses 3 to 6 of ‘Al-Fatihah’.
   
   

Selecting Options:

The search form has an Options button that allows to select the various features available through the search form:

Language Options

• There are 22 language options to choose from:
  • Arabic text of the Holy Quran (with the option to select from 4 Arabic fonts)
    • The ‘Arabic reading’ option is helpful whilst reading a Part/Juz or a Chapter of the Holy Quran. Only the Arabic text will be shown and this can be helpful when reciting the Holy Quran.

• The Arabic text and 2010 English translation are switched on ( ) by default and by clicking on the buttons can be switched off ( ).
• You can switch any language on/off based on your search requirement.
• The options selected throughout our search engine will remain saved between browsing sessions.

Audio Options

• There are 2 Arabic recitation options to choose from:
  • Reciter: Hazrat Ameer (III) Dr. Saeed Ahmad Khan
  • Reciter: Hazrat Ameer (V) Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Saeed
• The recitation of an entire chapter is only possible at this point. In the future, we will offer the facility to play an individual verse or verse-range.
• The recitation audio player will only display if you are viewing a chapter. If you enter a ‘Start Verse’ or an ‘End Verse’ it will not display.

Extra Options

• Copy text: This option places a copy icon ( ) beside each searched item to allow copying of the relevant text. The font is not copied in this process. You can then paste the text and format as needed. This option is selected by default.
• Dark mode: This option darkens the background of the page to improve readability in low-light conditions, e.g., at night-time.
• Labels: This option will add a text label above the translation / commentary of each verse to identify which language is being displayed. This can be a useful feature when several translations / commentaries have been selected at the same time, e.g., if you wish to display the Dutch, German and Spanish translations and select the ‘Labels’ option, then each verse will have the respective language label shown above it. A label will not appear above the search results in Arabic as it is easily identifiable.
• Section (Ruku) titles: This option will add the section (ruku) number with its title above the first verse of each section. These section titles are not part of the Arabic text of the Holy Quran and were provided by Maulana Muhammad Ali to summarise the content of each section. These are displayed above the chapters that have more than one section, i.e., Chapters 2 to 79. Titles are only available for the Dutch, French, English, Javanese, Indonesian and Spanish translations. Only the section numbers will be displayed for the Arabic text, German and Urdu translations. This option is selected by default.
• Now click on the ‘Search’ button to display the portion of the Holy Quran required.
• By clicking on the ‘Reset’ button you can reset the entire search form and delete any previous form entries.

A virtual Arabic/Urdu keyboard has been provided and is accessible by clicking the Arabic/Urdu button that is available below the ‘Search term(s)’ box. This virtual keyboard provides all the necessary alphabets to assist users in typing their ‘search term(s)’. This feature enables access for users who do not have an Arabic or Urdu keyboard installed on their computer or mobile device.

Selecting Options:

The search form has an Options button that allows to select the various features available through the search form:

Search Term Options:

• Search mode:
  This section provides the ability to search in 5 different modes:
  • All words (AND mode):
    This will search all the search words that are entered, e.g., Moses Jesus, will search all verses where these two Prophets have been mentioned in the Holy Quran. There is no need to enter AND between the search words. This option is selected by default.
  • Any words (OR mode):
    This option will search for verses were any of the words are present, e.g., Moses Jesus, will search all verses where either Moses or Jesus appear. There is no need to enter OR between the search words.
  • Exclude words (NOT mode):
    This search mode will find verses that contain all the words to the left of NOT and if the words to the right are found in a verse, then that verse is ignored from the search results. Searching Moses Jesus NOT Abraham will search all verses where Moses and Jesus are mentioned but will ignore the verses where Abraham is mentioned. Please ensure that the word NOT is entered whilst searching.
  • Exact search (“” mode):
    This mode will find the exact search phrase. There is no need to enter quotation marks (“”) around your search phrase. Searching Lord of the worlds will find all verses with this exact phrase.
  • Partial search:
    Here the user can enter a partial word and depending on which of the 3 search modes below is selected the search will take place. There is no need to enter the symbol * to your search terms as simply typing in the desired partial word is sufficient.
    • Contains (*fast* mode):
      This will search for the partial word entered and locate all verses with that word or with alphabets to either side, e.g., searching fast will find: fast, fasting, steadfast, steadfastness, etc.
    • Starts with (fast* mode):
      This option will search for words beginning with this partial word, e.g., fast will locate: fast, fasting, etc.
    • Ends with (*fast mode):
      This will search for words ending with this partial word, e.g., fast will locate: fast, steadfast, etc.
• Search term options:
  This section provides two further options:
  • Highlight search term(s):
    This option will highlight your search term(s) in the search results. It is switched on ( ) by default and can be switched off ( ) by pressing the button.
  • Case sensitive:
    This option will carry out a case sensitive search, i.e., obey capital and small letters, e.g., Him will search all instances of Him with a capital H, whereas searching him will only search for the word him with a small h. Another example is searching God vs god.

Language Options

• Language to Search:
  You have the option to select one out of the 21 language formats that can be searched:
  • Arabic text without vowels, e.g., typing in: محمد
    Searching in this format is easier than with vowels (see below).
  • Arabic text with vowels, e.g., typing in: مُحَمَّدٌ
    Typing in this format is more cumbersome than typing without vowels. However, this feature can be useful when researching particular term(s) that can be copy/pasted into this form after initially using the Read the Quran form to find the term(s).
    If the ‘Highlight search term(s)’ option is switched on (see above), then the search results will show the verses in Arabic with and without vowels. The latter format will show the highlighted term(s) from your search query.
